Specification for single circuit overhead lines on wood poles for use at high voltage up to and including 33 kV
prEN 50XXX covers the design requirements for overhead lines on wood poles for operation at high voltages up to and including 45 kV. Although included within this new standard, covered conductor lines are not considered in this Specification, and readers are directed to ENATS 43-121 in this respect. Users of prEN 50XXX are offered a choice of design bases, and each National Committee within Europe is required to declare within the National Normative Aspects (NNAs) of the Standard the approach that will apply within their territory: (i) a deterministic design (called the “Empirical” design approach). (ii) a probabilistic design (called the “General” design approach). The “General” design approach was not considered practical, nor economic, for use in the UK due to the requirement that intermediate supports should be designed to cater for the full effect of vertical loads, including heavy icing events in still air, and also in limiting the pole top deflection to less than 10 % of pole length under ultimate load conditions. Such extreme loading scenarios have not commonly been considered for wood pole line designs in the UK and as a result, the UK National Committee decided to adopt the “Empirical” design approach for new wood pole lines built to prEN 50XXX, and which would be similar to overhead line designs produced historically It was recognized that the span/ spacing work previously included with the semi-probabilistic, load-factored design approach as detailed in the first issue of this Specification should be retained, as this had proven to give good conductor clash performance in practice. The original weather mapping has therefore been retained in this respect only. In order that Users may select their preferred conductor size(s) and design basis and to avoid publishing the very large number of tables that would otherwise be required to accommodate all possible permutations in a written document similar to traditional specifications, this Specification is provided in part as a suite of computer spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel Workbook filename: 4340_EMPIRICAL.XLS). Users are required to generate their own tables using the appropriate spreadsheet. These tables, together with the text from the written part of this Specification then form the User’s own specification. A User Guide to the spreadsheet suite is provided as Appendix A to this Specification.
