The Energy Networks Association (ENA) represents the interests of all energy companies in the UK. The Document Catalogue System is an online catalogue of engineering documents available from the ENA.

Air break switch disconnectors and expulsion fuses: Recommendations
This EREC specifies the ratings applicable to overhead conductor connected air break switch disconnectors (ABSDs) from 7.2 kV to 36 kV, together with some technical requirements. It also recommends ratings that may be applicable to expulsion fuses in some circumstances. This EREC excludes ABSDs incorporated in metal-clad or cellular type switchgear. It also excludes other types of overhead conductor connected fusegear. From Issue 4 of this EREC, the ratings given in the appropriate tables are only applicable to legacy devices. New devices shall conform to the relevant clauses of TS 41-47 [N1]. NOTE: Legacy devices are those air break switch disconnectors that are already installed and in use on the UK electricity distribution network, or have already been procured and are in store awaiting installation. This EREC covers typical operational practices and safety precautions, and for convenience includes suggested methods of identification and marking that continue to be used 45 throughout the industry.
Issue 4 June, 2021 Minor revision to Issue 3 to include guidance on ratings for expulsion fuses This issue includes the following principal technical changes. Document title changed to reflect amended scope and now includes guidance on expulsion fuses Clause 3, Terms and definitions: Additional definitions (3.3, 3.5 – 3.11) added to improve clarity of the document. New Clause 4, Categories of devices: Descriptions of categories 0,1,2 and 3 have been subject to clarification using the new terms (Clause 3). The intent is to simplify the description. There is no technical change from previous Issue. Clause 6, ABSD ratings: New clause title added to differentiate ABSDs from expulsion fuse ratings (which are in an Annex A). Cross references to tables have been updated. Inclusion of the term ‘independent operation’ in final paragraph to improve clarity. Clause 8, Operation: In para 1, the word ‘shall’ has been changed to ‘should’ in respect of staff receiving adequate and appropriate training – this change reflects the intent of the document being a guide. A new para 2 has been added to consider use of ‘portable current interruption devices when operating ABSDs and expulsion fuses’. Para 2 is accompanied with a NOTE. New paras 3,4 and 5 have been added providing guidance on ferroresonance when disconnecting expulsion fuses. Clause 10, new sub-clauses added regarding category identification and recording. New Table 1.5, Expulsion fuses: suggested making and breaking duty. New Annex A – Guidance on assigning ratings to expulsion fuses. Includes fault making duty and load breaking duty. New Annex C added. Typical procedure for operating expulsion fuse. New Bibliography inserted to capture informative reference (ENA ACE Report 75)
